G.M. Diet: Are The Results A Myth Or The Gospel Truth?

Weight loss has been an age old desire of all women but working out has always been a nightmare for us. The 21st century woman finds it extremely difficult to take time out for exercise and let’s face it, we’re too lazy to do it even with the time. Add to that the Holiday goodies and you have the perfect recipe for those tiers in your tummy. We know those cakes and pies can be ruthless in their temptations and you are completely justified to give in. But do we have a solution afterwards?

Also known as the ‘Cabbage diet’ or ‘The Sacred Heart diet’, the G.M. Diet is said to be the answer to all our prayers. Originally designed by General Motors for its employees, this is a week long diet plan where, by the end of the week, one can lose up to five kgs.  And, no, you don’t have to starve yourself. You don’t even have to spend the entire day at the gym. It’s so simple and easy to follow that one might actually doubt its effectiveness.

The diet basically outlines a seven day chart of varied but very specific fruits and vegetables and very little meat and rice. The idea is to burn out extra calories by consuming food that will provide lower calorific value than that required by the body, so that the extra calories get used up. So here's how the GM diet works:

Day 1 includes all fruits except bananas. Also to chug down 8 glasses of water is a must.

Day 2 includes baked or raw vegetables and lots of water intake.

Day 3 has vegetables and fruits except potatoes and bananas. And not to miss the eight glasses of water.

Day 4 includes lots of water, three glasses of milk, eight bananas and a special G.M. soup.

(Soup ingredients: water, 2 green peppers, six large onions, tomatoes, celery, one cabbage, chicken soup stock, salt and pepper to taste)

Day 5 you can have lean meat/brown rice/tofu, eight tomatoes and yes, water.

Day 6 has lean meat/brown rice/tofu, G.M. soup, vegetables, and water

Day 7 the last day of the diet includes, brown rice, cooked vegetables, fruit juice and water

But here are a few precautions you should be taking while following GM diet: 

1) STAY HYDRATED: It is important to drink 8-15 glasses of water everyday while you are on GM diet

2) AVOID ALCOHOL: Alcohol needs to be avoided from the diet as much as possible

3) GO FOR SUGAR FREE DRINKS: Water, club soda, plain black coffee black tea and fruit juices can be taken along with the diet on the 7th day but they should be free from refined sugar.

But before following the GM diet, you should know about the side effects it might have on you:

-The GM diet is not suitable in a long run and should not be followed by children and pregnant women.

-Also, first few days of GM diet may lead to dizziness and headaches, fatigue and hunger cravings. Hence, it is imperative to chug down lots of water while you are on GM diet to prevent your body to go under dehydration.

The bottom line is, despite all these side effects the G.M. diet does serve its primary purpose, i.e., losing weight. High fiber and water content in the diet will ensure flushing out the fat and will ensure faster digestion. When the body is deprived of a constant supply of fat and carbohydrates, it will start using up the calories which is stored in muscles and thus begins a rapid loss of weight.

However, It is not advised to prolong the diet beyond the stipulated one week to avoid malnutrition. Once the desired weight is achieved, you can always maintain it through exercise and a healthy wholesome diet. But if you are looking forward to lose weight for a wedding and have little to no time for exercise or yoga, give GM diet a lchance, also if you follow it religiously sticking to the rules you might just be 3-5 kgs lighter by the end of the week.

But, remember nothing works best than a regular physical activity or an exercise to stay fit in the longer run.
